Migration in mental health care

It is expected that staff shortages will rise to 100.000 in 2030 in the health care sector. More specific, in the mental health care sector this shortage will amount 4100 employees. Looking at the specialism Clinical psychologists, it has not been possible to fill all the available GZ-trainee spots in the past years. In all the regions in the Netherlands we are looking at a tight labor market in the healthcare sector. According to forecast models this tightness will only grow in 2030.

For immigrants it is hard to get a job in the Netherlands. Labor participation is low in the first few years after receiving the residence permit and remains below average in the long term. If we look more specifically to the health care sector in comparison to the entire Dutch economy, only few people with a migration background work in this sector. This precisely is the opportunity for BesteBaanindeZorg and her partners to fill this gap.

Figure 1. Share of employees with a migration background. Healthcare sector (excluding childcare) compared to the entire Dutch economy.

Within the healthcare sector the number of employees with a migration background differ per subsector. Looking at the mental healthcare sector this amount to 11%. Looking at people that work in a medical profession where a BIG-registration is required, the larger part holds a Dutch nationality. When it comes to the GZ-psychologists in the Netherlands, 98.1% has a Dutch nationality, 1.6% a foreign nationality within the EER and 0.3% a foreign nationality outside the EER. Furthermore, in comparison with other European countries and the OECD average, only 2.2% of the doctors that work in the Netherlands followed their education abroad. Finally, the percentage of doctors that were born abroad is with 17.1% lower than the average of the OECD-countries.

These numbers offer enormous potential for BesteBaanindeZorg. We believe that there is a lot of talent outside our own national borders and we strive to sustainable employability of this talent within the Netherlands.

With a value of 10, the qualification is very broad, from 10 to 30 average, from 30 to 100 tight, and at 100 or more very tight.
